ELLENVILLE – The Ellenville Central School District Board of Education will likely adopt the 2017-2018 BOCES budget as well as a new district budget during their April 19 meeting, according to ECSD superintendent Lisa Wiles.
The proposed 2017-2018 budget totals $49,367,418, an increase of $1,130,553 from last year's adopted budget of $48,236,864. That equates to a 2.34 percent increase overall.
There are a number of components that pushed the budget upwards, including a new elementary summer school program, Wiles said, as well as increasing special education costs and increasing salaries. The proposed tax levy will increase by $326,405 from last year's figure of $23,286,191 to a proposed $23,612,596. The tax levy, ECSD assistant superintendent of business Vince Napoli said, is still within the tax cap of 1.40 percent and does not require a super majority vote of 60 percent.
A rise in the amount of state aid to be received by the district, worked out by the governor and state legislature late last week, has helped ease the burden for local taxpayers and make some new programs possible that have been on hold over recent years.
If the budget does not pass at the May vote, the proposed contingency budget is $49,313,368, which would mean the district would have to cut.
In other school news, applications for board seats are due Monday, April 17 to the district office. There will be three, three-year term seats open that begin on July 1 and expire June 30, 2020. The terms expiring include those of Willie Bruce, Jr, Phil Mattracion and board president Karen Osterhoudt.
In a district-wide letter, superintendent Wiles informed community members that renovations to the high school auditorium approved as part of the capital project in 2014 have required the rescheduling and relocation of several year-end events. Namely, the high school graduation taking place June 23 at 6:30 p.m. Ideally, the weather will cooperate and the graduation can go on as scheduled on the district's football field. In the face of inclement weather, however, the ceremony will take place at the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse at Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake.
If moved, the district will offer bus transportation from Ellenville high school to the field house. For a complete list of upcoming end-of-year event dates and locations, visit the schools' website at www.ecs.k12.ny.us.
