Jonas M. Kilmer of Binghamton died on Monday last week. Some 25 years ago Jonas Kilmer and his brother, Dr. Kilmer, joined hands in a patent medicine business which had gotten under way. After a time the Doctor became of the opinion that the business had reached its climax, and would decline. His brother, Jonas, was of different opinion, thinking that there was a way to continue the business with profit. The Doctor sold out to him, Jonas paying what was regarded as an extravagant price for the other’s half. The new owner managed with some trouble to raise $20,000 for advertising purposes; spend the money in short time and the following years doubled the amount of advertising, paying out $40,000; the succeeding year doubling again to $80,000 – and went on till he spent half a million dollars in advertising. When he died last week his fortune was estimated at $15,000,000 – purely the fruit of persistence and good business management.
