Dix Carried Ulster – The Vote

According to the unofficial reports Dix carried Ulster County by 28 against a majority of over 1,000 for Hughes. Contrasted with the other results the vote on Governor gives room for belief that certain ante-election rumors were not nearly as groundless as those who so vehemently denied them and branded them with the “short and ugly word” would have us believe. Fairchild carried the county for Congress by over 800, which shows that there is no great dissatisfaction with him or Republican tariff policies in Ulster — of which we have no doubt. Augustus Hayes was fatally crippled in his run for Senator by his close affiliations with G. D. B. Hasbrouck, which largely nullified Mr. Hayes’ pleasing personality, while we have seen no signs that the effort made to save some of Mr. Hasbrouck’s lieutenants was exerted especially in behalf of the candidate for Senator. Mr. Hayes carried his county by 354, but Mr. Fiero, who was a strong candidate, carried Green County by over 1,100 and is elected by a good majority. Judge Cantine proved his popularity by defeating one of the leaders of the Ulster County bar by plurality of 1,262.

Then the fight for district attorney. Mr. Cunningham ran on a good three years’ record, and one which entitled him on the strength of it to a re-election – and his plurality over Van Buren of 2,484 is not far behind the vote of three years ago. The result on the county treasurer is an apparent victory for Cook of 25 over Little, but it may take the official canvass to settle the question, while the Leader of this morning hints at a contest for this office. As was expected, Washburn wins for Assembly in the first by 496. Samuel C. Waring made an uphill fight in the second Assembly district and wins by 661 over Gathright. Mr. Waring carried the town of Wawarsing (outside of Gathright’s vote of 14 on the Ind. League ticket), but he should have had much better support. As it was he was saved from the loss of a great many votes in the town by the statement of his stand in the last issue of the Journal, as many readers of the paper were watching for some expression of the kind on the part of the candidate for Assembly.

A surprise was the defeat of the two Republican candidates for the school director in the town of Wawarsing. We believe it was altogether unnecessary as a very little attention to the matter would have produced a different effect. As it was scores of voters in the town paid no attention to the ballots for the school director, either overlooking them altogether or returning them without mark. A great many friends of Commissioner Perry will be sorry if the result should be so far reaching as to deprive him of his office.
