Those in charge of such matters say that it makes no difference whether some of these dances as danced by professionals are unobjectionable or not; if they are permitted and become general the result will be to open the door to exhibitions which no decent person can condone, and lower the tone of the hall.

We understand that in other places nearby where that course has been pursued such has been the result. Recent questioning on the subject has also disclosed the fact that several occurrences of more or less recent date, not so far from home, were of such indecent character as to cause many present at the time to leave in disgust.

It might not be out of place, in this connection, to refer to a matter which has been more or less subject of discussion for some time past by those who perhaps will be ridiculed as “old fashioned,” and “out of date” – namely, the holding of public and semi-private affairs of this and similar nature, by high school pupils. It is not many years ago that the proposition to have a few minutes dancing following the annual reception of the graduating class – a private and invited affair – was frowned down upon with horror and it was considered a very risky innovation when a class a few years back was permitted to dance a few modest and sedate turns to the music of the orchestra in attendance for the occasion. And these people were seniors, about to sever their connection with the school.

Fire from a Poker.

Mrs. Alex McConnell was busy baking last Wednesday, and had occasion to stir up the fire with a poker. Afterward, with the hot poker in her hand she went and raised the window to the front room. Soon after, she smelled smoke and discovered the curtains and other hangings ablaze, having undoubtedly caught from the hot poker. Mr. Hazen, who lives in the same building, threw water on the fire and got it out, about $15 damage having been done. It might easily have been worse, which was especially fortunate, as they had allowed the insurance to lapse.
