If the weather is going to insist on staying so brisk and snowy, we at the Mamakating Library would like to voice our whole-hearted support for your desire to stay home in cozy clothes and curl up with a good book! Here are some of our best recommendations of cozy books for all ages.

‘Legends & Lattes,’ by Travis Baldree (Adult)

Plot: After a lifetime of bounties and bloodshed, Viv is hanging up her sword for the last time. The battle-weary orc aims to start fresh, opening the first ever coffee shop in the city of Thune. But old and new rivals stand in the way of success — not to mention the fact that no one has the faintest idea what coffee actually is. If Viv wants to put the blade behind her and make her plans a reality, she won't be able to go it alone.

Why recommend it?: This book went viral on nearly every social media platform and for good reason. It is a sweet story of a woman leaving her sordid past behind to start a new life and open a coffee shop in a cute little town. Oh… did I mention she just happens to be an Orc and no one in town has ever even heard of coffee? Follow Viv and a delightful cast of characters on their entrepreneurial journey, with a few twists!

‘The Library of Lost Things,’ by Laura Taylor Namey (Teen)

Plot: From the moment she first learned to read, literary genius Darcy Wells has spent most of her time living in the worlds of her books. There, she can avoid the crushing reality of her mother’s hoarding, and pretend her life is simply ordinary. But when a new property manager becomes more active in the upkeep of their apartment complex, the only home Darcy has ever known outside of her books suddenly hangs in the balance.

Why recommend it?: Darcy is a literary genius and bookworm who finds her joy deep in the pages of every book she can find at her local book shop. Asher is a boy who’s future suddenly took a left turn he wasn’t expecting. After years of finding her happy endings in stories, Darcy thinks she might have a chance at her own happily ever after once she meets Asher, but in order to do that, she needs to confront her own truth — even if it’s a little messy.

‘One Jar of Magic,’ by Corey Ann Haydu (Middle Grade)

Plot: Rose Alice Anders is Little Luck. Lucky to be born into the Anders family. Lucky to be just as special and magical as the most revered man in town—her father. The whole town has been waiting for Rose to turn twelve, when she can join them in their annual capturing of magic on New Year’s Day and become the person she was born to be. But when that special day finally comes, Rose barely captures one tiny jar of magic. Now Rose’s dad won’t talk to her anymore and her friendships have gotten all twisted and wrong. So when Rose hears whispers that there are people who aren’t meant for magic at all, she begins to wonder if that’s who she belongs with.

Why recommend it?: For the kids who couldn’t get enough of Encanto last year, we highly recommend this award-winning book about a mysterious, magical family, with lots of secrets. Rose has been anxiously waiting to turn 12 so that she can finally inherit her magic. But when that day doesn’t go as planned, Rose becomes the topic of a lot of rumors and begins to feel like she doesn’t belong. Readers will love this story of a young girl discovering her own self-confidence and piecing together what is truly real in this world.

‘Bunny’s Book Club,’ by Annie Silvestro (Young readers)

Plot: Bunny loves to sit outside the library with the kids and listen to summer story time. But when the weather gets cold and everyone moves inside, his daily dose of joy is gone. Desperate, Bunny refuses to miss out on any more reading time and devises a plan to sneak into the library at night... through the library’s book drop!

Why recommend it?: Bunny just loves to sit outside the local library and hear the stories read during the summer story times. But once the weather turns cold, and story times move indoors, Bunny needs to find a way to keep the stories going. How in the world will he and his fuzzy woodland friends get into the library to keep the magic of reading alive? You’ll have to pick up a copy at your library to find out!
