As a lover of history, Kyle Williams is eager to preserve Shawangunk history for generations to come as the town of Shawangunk’s new historian, replacing longtime historian Barbara Palinkas, who had recently resigned. While Williams might seem like a new face, his connections to the Shawangunk region actually run deep.

In an interview, Williams told the Shawangunk Journal that his Dutch ancestors once settled the region. In the early 1600s, these settlers inhabited New Amsterdam (New York City), Wiltwyck (Kingston), and Fort Orange, which is now Albany. His enamoration of our history was also further piqued upon viewing old stone houses, and driving down old roads. These things, along with re-tracing the steps taken by our early ancestors, instigated his appreciation of the beauty of our history and surrounding areas.

In 2005, Williams graduated from Pine Bush High School and then from Marist College in 2010. His fondness for history started at the age of 14 when he became a Civil War reenactor. He joined the 124th New York, a local group based out of Orange County. After learning of the heroic deeds of our local heroes, he became immersed in that period.

“I started travelling to museums and battlefields to learn anything and everything that I could. This passion opened my eyes to other historical events throughout our local history,” said Williams.

Williams has been a town of Shawangunk resident for about 30 years, and was appointed the town historian on February 3. He is looking forward to showcasing our vibrant history via lectures, articles, and future publications. Currently, he is writing a book detailing the history and personal stories of the 156th New York volunteers.

Williams stresses that this project is not for his own personal merit or gain. He is writing this to resurrect and preserve the honor, legacy, and sacrifice of those who served from Greene, Ulster, and Richmond counties during the Civil War.

Speaking of local history, did you know that an ancient battle took place right in our own backyard? According to Williams, the Second Esopus War had concluded in 1663, following the attack by the native settlers on present-day Kingston. They took many hostages in their wake. They brought these prisoners to “Old Fort,” which was along the Shawangunk Kill near Hoagerburgh Road. This is just a few miles outside the hamlet of Wallkill.

Dutch Captain Marten Krieger led an expedition that rescued the hostages after a bloody battle. This battle led to the death of Esopus Chief Papequanaehen and several others. While this had effectively ended the war, tensions continued throughout the region.
