A Kingston baker who got her first taste of the culinary arts at Ulster BOCES will compete for a $25,000 prize on Food Network’s latest cooking competition show “Summer Baking Championship.” Anrika Martin, owner of Kingston’s own Di Sweet Spot bakery, will cross rolling pins with nine other contestants in a competition to showcase their creativity and kitchen skills while turning out summer-themed confections.

Martin is a Kingston native and graduate of Ulster BOCES’ culinary arts program. After high school she attended Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I., where she earned a bachelor’s degree in baking and pastry arts. She worked up and down the East Coast honing her skills before returning to Kingston and opening Di Sweet Spot at 70 Lindsley Ave. earlier this year. The bakery highlights Martin’s Caribbean roots, a background that should serve her well in a competition that emphasizes warm-weather delights and summertime specialties.

Hosted by Jesse Palmer and featuring a judges’ panel made up of Duff Goldman, Carla Hall and Damaris Phillips, the show is part of Food Network’s wildly popular baking championship franchise that includes holiday-themed and kids’ competitions. For Summer Baking Championship, contestants will test their mettle in a variety of challenges. The first episode, “Dockside Memories,” which aired on May 15, asks contestants to channel summer days spent by the water. The challenges include making doughnuts that look like floaties with a 3D decorative element and creating a cake with a gelatin water feature. Other challenges will be based around summer fruits and outdoor activities. In a nod to summer blockbusters, the contestants will have to come up with pink creations in honor of the upcoming film “Barbie.” In the finale, three finalists will have to create a two-tiered movable cake designed to look like a Fourth of July parade float.

The show premiered this week with back-to back-episodes; new episodes will appear weekly Monday nights at 9 p.m.
