The Woodstock Farm Sanctuary rescued two piglets this month after days of fundraising to bring them home. Silvia and Marge, found separately running loose on roads, are living together at the sanctuary. Oracle the rescue sheep is also thriving.

Silvia came to the sanctuary’s attention on Tuesday, Sept. 26, after a local family found her wandering near Ithaca and took her in temporarily while the sanctuary raised the funds to adopt her. She’s a one-month-old Yorkshire piglet and her tail is docked – a telltale sign of pig farming. The sanctuary speculates that she fell from a farm transport truck on her way to a feedlot, where she would have been raised for slaughter.

Instead, the sanctuary took her in on Sept. 28.

“Sylvia is in safe hands now,” the sanctuary wrote in a Facebook post that described her as “so friendly and curious about everything.”

Marge, another pig farm refugee found in rural Pennsylvania, arrived at the sanctuary on Oct. 3, after it raised almost $5,000 from public donations and a single donor to match them. A bit older than Silvia, Marge has been treated for parasites.

The two were introduced Oct. 11. While piglets are usually still with their mothers, Silvia and Marge have formed a miniature family to make up for it.

“Their personalities complement each other so well,” WFS Marketing and Communications Manager Kelly Holt wrote. "Silvia is affectionate and social, while extroverted Marge run circles around her."

“We’re committed to caring for them for the rest of their lives,” the sanctuary wrote. “Sylvia and Marge will likely grow to be several hundred pounds each and live with us into their senior-hood. This is only the beginning.”

Oracle, the sheep rescued on Sept.11 after a month-long push dubbed Operation Oracle, was kept in quarantine for 30 days while the sanctuary monitored her health and tested her for viruses, bacteria and parasites. She was medically cleared this week and released to meet the rest of the rescue herd.

“As soon as we opened the gate to her isolation pen, she sprinted out with a hop and bolted straight to her sheep friends,” said Shelter Manager Diana Martins. “It was as if Oracle was an old friend they’d met before. You could see in her eyes that she felt more at ease. Once in with them, she was immediately accepted into the herd.”
