The Terrace Motel, a crumbling aqua-tinged Ellenville landmark bought with high hopes for a turnaround two years ago, is on the market again, asking close to double its last price.

The 8.2-acre property, on a hilltop along Route 209 at the southern end of the village, includes a “structurally sound” two-story building with 24 rooms across 7,009 square feet and a swimming pool, according to a listing by the Upstate Curious at Compass. The owners are seeking $910,000, well above the $550,000 they paid in 2021.

“We are as sad about letting go of this project ourselves as we are excited to see what new owners accomplish with it – and hope that the past few years of blood, sweat and tears, and planning meetings will set them off to a great start,” owners Jemma Allen, 36; Mitch Allen, 37; Victoria Nelson, 35; and Anthony Nelson, 41, said in a joint statement provided to the Shawangunk Journal.

“Our own lives have changed as much as the world has changed since we took this on in 2021 – kids, moves, jobs – and we are just not the right team to take it to the finish line anymore,” the two couples said. “We are more than happy to support the new buyers in any way we can, and our continued love and gratitude for Ellenville and this community and the support they showed us over the years could not be any bigger!”

The owners invested time and money, draining the swimming pool and seeking to remove the asbestos inside, a project that’s expensive, dangerous and essential.

“We have made significant investment in the property since the purchase,” Victoria Nelson said.

Looming over Ellenville, with a spectacular view of the Shawangunk Ridge, the former motel is in tatters, the pool half-filled with a murky liquid and its many rooms open to the elements. A forlorn suitcase sits in the corner of one red-carpeted room, its red-and-white wallpaper marked with what looks like the outline of a desk or television stand. Outside the buildings, various debris, like pots and pans, old equipment and clothing, litter the area.

In July 2021, the owners held an auction for the motel’s entire contents, including mid-century modern tables, chairs, chests of drawers, beds and side tables. Hundreds of buyers turned up in search of furniture and lighting, as well as off-white push-button landline phones and at least one vintage television set.

“It was much more intense than anything we had imagined,” Victoria Nelson said at the time. “We got rid of everything.”
