Ellenville Police revealed the identities of three men charged in the shooting at the Canal Locks apartments on March 8. That shooting, which hospitalized a man for two days, shocked the village and according to Chief Mattracion of the EPD, kicked off a swift and massive response from Ulster County Law Enforcement into action.

At a press conference Wednesday afternoon at the Village of Ellenville Government Center, Mattracion announced the arrests of Luis Lopez Gonzales, 30, a resident of Greenfield Park, Wawarsing, Shaquan McGuinness, 26, of the City of Kingston, and Nathaniel Negron, 28, with an address on Warren Street in the Village of Ellenville.

Also on hand for the announcement were Sheriff Juan Figueroa, and Ulster County Sheriff’s Office Detective Abram Markiewicz. Among the other officers present, Mattracion singled out US Marshall Jarret Wager, of the Violent Fugitive Task Force.

Mattracion praised the “intensive and extensive” investigation that lead to the arrests of the three suspects. Coordinated arrests were made on Tuesday March 24, beginning in Ellenville, then at room 277 at the Skytop Motel in Kingston, and then in the City of Kingston a little later.

Gonzales was arraigned on $10,000 bail. McGuinness was held on $50,000 bail and Negron held on $100,000 cash bail. Negron is the suspected shooter.

Mattracion described the incident at Canal Locks Apartments, too. On the evening of March 8, the three men arrested entered the building, then went to apartment 122. They had a conversation through the door with a man inside, he opened the door slightly and there was pushing and an attempt to force the door open against him. During this a rifle was fired, and the bullet struck the man in the apartment in his forearm, and exited at the elbow.

The three assailants fled. The shooting victim was taken to hospital and spent two days there before being released.

In the apartment at the time of the shooting there were several other people, including two toddlers, aged one and two.

Mattracion said the motive for the attack was still under investigation. There may be further arrests, as well. He said that all three of the men arrested were familiar to police, and that a Grand Jury is hearing evidence and may order others charged.
