Reshma Massarone, a 40-year-old bank manager from Pine Bush, was sentenced on Tuesday to 114 months in prison for attempting to hire a hitman to kill her brother-in-law.

Last summer, Massarone offered to pay $10,000 to an undercover police officer in Guyana pretending to be a hitman to do the job while her brother-in-law was in Guyana. Massarone and the officer exchanged dozens of Facebook messages, phone calls, and WhatsApp texts. On one Facebook Messenger exchange, the officer told Massarone the assassination was planned for the next day, and she responded that he would be paid after he “[took] care of business.” She promised other jobs in the future, and swore on the lives of her children that she would pay him if her brother-in-law was gotten “rid” of. Then, far too late, she told the officer: “No more text.”

Massarone made a down payment of $2,500 dollars, and was caught on camera counting out the bills at a Western Union office. The officer then told her he would shoot her brother-in-law and they had reached the point from which there was no turning back. “Right,” Massarone responded. “No turning back.”

When the man didn’t die, Massarone grew impatient. She suggested rat poison if he wasn’t able to shoot him, and promised she would “take care of” the agent after the job was done. “You is all talk and no action,” she complained at one point. “Either way, if I find somebody to do the job you’re going to get blame, so cut the bulls--t and let’s get it done.”

Massarone is a mother of two who worked at Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union in Woodstock, which she had twice sued for racial discrimination, but both cases were dismissed. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams, who prosecuted the case, said that her “chilling plan to have a member of her own family murdered for the low price of ten thousand dollars” was “unthinkably heartless.”

She was arrested in August of 2023 and pleaded guilty to a U.S. district judge in White Plains on charges including solicitation to a commit a crime of violence. In addition to the 114 months of prison time, she will have three years of supervised release.
