Rondout Valley High School welcomes Kristen Johnsen as the new Assistant Principal. She was approved on September 1 by the Board of Education, just ahead of the first day of school.

Johnsen has 20 years of experience in education, primarily as a music instructor. She transferred to RVHS from the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, where she was the Director of Fine and Performing Arts. She oversaw arts curriculum for the entire district, handled staff, budgets and extracurricular programs, while also developing new classes for students.

She has a bachelor's and master's degree in Music Education from SUNY Fredonia, as well as Master in Educational Leadership and Administration from the College of Saint Rose. Her instrument of choice is the clarinet, and she makes music whenever she can.

“I look forward to building strong relationships with students, families, and staff while supporting a positive and engaging school environment,” she said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of this community and look forward to a wonderful school year ahead.”

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Spadaro added that her music knowledge is a particular boon to Rondout, a nine-time winner of the NAMM Foundation's prestigious Best Communities for Music Education.

“Her extensive experience as both an educator and administrator, coupled with her background in music and the arts, gives her a unique perspective on the many ways students learn, grow, and find their passions," Spadaro said. "Her commitment to supporting students and staff, building strong relationships, and creating meaningful opportunities for students will make her a wonderful addition to Rondout Valley High School.”
