In the heart of the Hudson Valley, one footrace has stood the test of time: Ellenville Run Like the Wind. Founded in 1983, it proudly holds the title of the oldest organized race in the Hudson Valley. More than just a competition, this 5K run/walk has become a tradition – an annual community celebration of health, giving, and local pride.

For over four decades, Run Like the Wind has brought together runners, walkers, volunteers, families, and sponsors for a common purpose: supporting the Ellenville community. Every dollar raised through this race goes right back into the region. Proceeds benefit graduating seniors through sports scholarships, support the Family of Ellenville food bank, sponsor youth programs like Ellenville Little League, and assist countless other local nonprofits and organizations that strengthen the fabric of the village and its surrounding communities.

While the mission has remained constant, the race course itself has seen many evolutions. The current certified 5K course is one of the most scenic and runner-friendly routes yet. A major highlight is the inclusion of the newly renovated, picturesque section of the scenic Rail Trail, which runs by the Little League fields. This addition has made the course not only more beautiful but also more meaningful – literally passing through the heart of the very community it supports.

Certification is key: the course is officially certified, which means times posted here can qualify runners for other competitive events. But don't let that intimidate you – this event has something for everyone. Whether you're chasing a personal best or just want to walk with your neighbors, Run Like the Wind is a welcoming and inclusive experience. There’s a designated walking category, and it’s common to see families, kids, and first-time participants all enjoying the course together.

The race is currently led by Jamie and Marcus Guiliano, local business owners and community leaders who took over as race directors in 2017. Marcus has been a long-time participant in the race himself, and together, the Guilianos – along with a small but dedicated group of volunteers – have kept the event vibrant, relevant, and growing each year. Among these key volunteers are Joe Stoeckeler, a passionate community advocate and local politician who has been instrumental in supporting civic events in Ellenville, and Matthew Goldman, the owner of the new independent bookstore The Common Good, who brings his energy, creativity, and deep love for the community to every step of the planning process.

And what would a community race be without a celebration at the finish line? The post-race party is a major highlight, complete with awards and cash prizes for the top three finishers. But the real reward comes in the form of delicious food and craft beverages, generously donated by local establishments. This year’s (and past) culinary supporters include El Paradiso, B&B Coffee Shop, and of course, Aroma Thyme Bistro. On the beverage side, Equilibrium Brewery and GreatLife Brewing will be pouring local craft beer, with Ja-Mar Liquors contributing a curated wine selection.
