The Rondout Valley High School boys’ soccer team managed to beat Marlboro by just one goal on Wednesday evening, for a winning score of 2-1. In the first period, Marlboro was ahead, with Chris Broderick scoring the first goal, and an assist by Chris Hagar. Then, in the second half, Marley Pileggi score two goals, with one assist by Jack Lawlor.

Both goalies, Reid Wogan for Rondout and Alex McAteer for Marlboro, had five saves.

In a statement for the Ganders, Maxwell Mead said, “What. A. Game! First half was very even until we failed to clear the ball and Marlboro pounced on it. [Broderick] took a quick touch into space and slid it past Reid, who was quick off his line to close it down. We had been playing pretty well but we weren’t able to test their GK much at all in the first half.

“The second half, we turned up the pressure a bit more and started trying to play. We had them pinned back — they were looking to protect their lead and hit us on the counter while we were starting to put more players forward to try to pressure their back four. It paid off late in the second half when a loose ball made it through to August Rubin, who put a quick move on their last defender and was fouled in the box. Marley Pileggi stepped up and powered the ensuring PK home to tie it up 1-1.

“Overtime saw the energy and intensity pick up even more. Players were tired and some were cramping, but everyone on both teams were really going for it! Finally, late in the second OT period, Jake Lawlor helped up a ball just inside the 18 and laid it back to Marley who smashed a great shot into the upper 90 for the game winner!! What an amazing feeling to get our first win in such a dramatic way against such a solid team!!”
